I am now experiencing extreme fatigue and am also developing lymphedema as a side effect of the radiation treatments that I’m receiving. Lymph edema is a chronic condition of localized swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system.
I learned that they perform lymphatic massage to drain the fluid at the hospital so I made an appointment and met with Danielle. She was so helpful and informative about the condition; I had no idea it could be permanent! The massage wasn’t like a typical massage because the touch is very light and performed around the lymph nodes. She also taught me how to do it so that I can keep up with the massage when I’m on my own and back to work.
I was becoming very depressed not just because of the swelling and pain but mostly because I feel like I keep losing days. I was supposed to meet my daughter in law, Christa, at her obstetricians’ office to see the ultrasound of my newest grandson but I didn’t have the energy to go.
It seems that when I start to think that everything is going to be OK, this disease throws something else unexpected at you. The isolation, loss of precious moments, fatigue and inability to walk a lot can be very difficult at times. The lymph edema feels like a setback but I understand that it’s temporary and I will be back to my old self soon.
Just gotta get my Jersey Strong back on!
