How To Protect Ourselves

Mobile devices such as cell phones and tablets have evolved since they started gaining popularity in the 90’s. Today, they are used for much more than just speaking on the phone. We have come to rely on them for a multitude of uses every day. They act as mini computers, cameras, alarm clocks and more.

In 1996 the FCC  adopted guidelines for evaluating human exposure to RF (radiofrequency) energy from mobile phones.  The guidelines have not changed even though cell phone usage has increased exponentially.

What can we do to protect ourselves?

1. Distance is your friend

Distance is your friend

While talking on your cell phone, prefer to position the cell phone away from your body as far as possible. Whenever possible, use the speakerphone mode or an air tube wired headset (not a wireless headset, not a wireless earpiece). The electromagnetic field (radiation) is one-fourth the strength at a distance of two inches and fifty times lower at three feet. If you are streaming or if you are downloading or
sending large files, try to keep the phone away
from your head and body.

Don’t Place Your Laptop On Your Lap

Laptops and tablets should be placed on a table, not on your lap. Turning off the wireless functions of your device removes RF electromagnetic radiation but does not remove the ELF electromagnetic radiation—so always place electronics on a table.

Cell Phones & Tablets Aren’t Recommended For Children & Toddlers

Children’s skulls are thinner than adults’ and their brains are still developing. Hence, radiation from cell phones penetrates more deeply into their brains and is likely to cause more damage. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that cell phones and similar devices are not recommended for children or toddlers.

Virtual Reality With Transmitting Cell Phones Exposes The Brain & Eyes To Microwave Radiation

The American Academy of Pediatrics reinforces its existing recommendations on limiting cell phone use for children and teenagers. The AAP also reminds parents that cell phones are not toys, and are not recommended for infants and toddlers to play with.

Avoid Carrying Your Cell Phone On Your Body At All Times

Do not carry a powered on cell phone in your pocket or bra. Cell phones emit radiation constantly, even when you are not actively using them. Power them 100% off before you carry them near your body. Dr. John West, Director of Surgery at Breastlink Cancer Centers states that there is a growing trend of breast cancer among young women who have no history of breast cancer in their family. He is seeing young women developing tumors where they placed their cell phones in their bra. He stated when he appeared on The Dr. Oz show that women who place their cell phones in their bras are playing with fire

Protect Your Fertility

Avoid Using Your Cell Phone Inside Spaces That Are Surrounded By Metal Like A Car, Elevator, Bus, Train Or Airplane

This radiation has been shown to damage sperm and ovaries. Many people move the phone away from their head to reduce exposure but down to their torso, forgetting that a cell phone or laptop to the abdomen results in higher radiation absorption to the reproductive organs.

The metal surroundings reflect the waves inside the vehicle, often increasing your radiation exposure. Your use also passively exposes other persons near you (children, pregnant women, and other adults) to your phone’s electromagnetic radiation fields, and also their exposure often increases when inside those metal enclosures.

Don’t Sleep With Your Cell Phone In Bed Or Near Your Head

Research shows that sleep is disturbed by cell phone radiation. Don’t sleep with it under or near your pillow. Need an alarm clock? Simply set the phone to “airplane” or “flight” or “off-line” mode, which will stop “wireless” electromagnetic field emissions. Don’t sleep with your phone in your bed or near your head. Unless the phone is off or in airplane mode, keep it at least a few feet away from your bed.

Minimize Talk Time Use Text Messaging & Speakerphone

Communicate via text messaging & speaker phone to limit the duration of exposure and the proximity to the body. Hold the phone out, away from your body when you press “send,” and do not rest your phone against your abdomen as you text.

Avoid Using Your Cell Phone When Your Signal Is Weak

Or when moving at high speed, such as in vehicles (car, bus, train or airplane) and elevators, as automatically, power increases to emit a maximum amount of radiation because the phone repeatedly attempts to connect to each nearest network antenna. The weaker the signal indicated on the cell phone display, the stronger the signal the cell phone puts out. And the stronger the signal, the greater the amount of radiation that’s being delivered to your body

Use A Corded Landline For Most Conversations

Forward your cell phone to landlines, then power off the cell phone without missing a call. Biological effects can be related to both strength of cell phone radiation dose and duration of exposure. Use a corded landline (not a cordless phone, because cordless phones use electromagnetic microwave technology just like cell phones). Corded landlines have no radiation emissions and are the best choice.

Statements About Cell Phone & Wireless

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) supports the review of radiation standards for cell phones in an effort to protect children’s health, reflect current cell phone use patterns, and provide meaningful consumer disclosure. Providing parents with information about any potential risks arms them with the information they need to make informed decisions for their families. The AAP advocates for more research into how cell phone exposure affects human health long term, particularly children’s health.

A Call For Clarity

Consumer Reports agrees with concerns raised by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Government Accountability Office about the tests, and thinks that new tests should be developed that take into account the potential vulnerability of children.

We think that cell-phone manufacturers should prominently display advice on steps that cell-phone users can take to reduce exposure to cell-phone radiation.

NJ Teachers Say Radiation Is A Health Threat

The 203,520-member New Jersey Education Assn. says devices such as cellphones, computers and WiFi are “ubiquitous in schools” but “threaten the physical and mental health” of teachers and staff. “At their best, they are powerful tools for education. At their worst, they threaten the physical and mental health of teachers, para educators, secretaries, librarians and other school staff members and students who spend numerous hours using the devices.

The City of Berkeley, CA Adopts Right To Know Ordinance

The ordinance, which was passed by City Council in 2015, requires cell phone retailers to post or provide flyers with a safety message. The message warns consumers who carry cell phones connected to wireless networks on their bodies that the levels of radiofrequency emitted by the phone may exceed the Federal Communication Commission’s, or FCC’s, safe exposure guidelines. In December 2019, the US Supreme Court rejected a challenge by CTIA, The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association against the city ordinance. It was the second time that the group appealed to the Supreme Court.

The Pembroke Pines, Florida Resolution on Cell Phone Radiation

Jimmy Gonzalez,(1972-2014) a Florida attorney who developed brain cancer after years of heavy cell phone use, petitioned for the Pembroke Pines Resolution 3362 in 2012 to raise awareness about cell phone radiation. Gonzalez believed the radiation emitted by his cellphone was the cause of his cancer, and brought his case to Commissioners in Pembroke Pines. The Resolution was passed on October 17, 2012 and  expresses the city’s “urgent concerns” about wireless radiation emitted from cell phones and individual’s health. It encourages citizens to read their manuals and presents information on how to reduce exposure by using a headset or speakerphone.
